An interactive exhibition on the culture of food, it's  tools and rituals.

Food, it’s consumption, and the culture around is closely connected with the act of preparation and the tools we are using for. Food is culture. All around the world people eat and people cook. Often they use the same tools, but prepare completely different meals with it. These tools, their appearance, stories and sounds is what somehow connects us. Preparing a certain dish means to execute specific rituals and processes using specific tools linked to specific story.

The sonic kitchen wall featured in the video is part of the group exhibition Kitchen Kitchen. For this exhibition I was co-responsible for the concept development and responsible for the corporate design.By touching the pink parts of the tools  sounds can be triggered. The installation is about the absence of food. How the sounds of preparation evoke emotions and memories, draw the actual dish and let you almost smell it. The exhibition is designed in the set-up of whole typical kitchen room. The different exhibits are part of this kitchen. Only the interactive exhibition pieces, the kitchen tools, are physically present and invite to play with, to touch it, to create kitchen symphony. The rest of the kitchen is represented as black outlines on the walls. Part of the sonic kitchen wall is the kitchen window - a drawn window frame surrounding a screen showing panoramic views from kitchens windows from all over the world. These ambiences and their sounds from different places complete the sonic kitchen wall soundscape.

Listen to the different sounds of the sonic kitchen tools!
